Best Padlocks of 2025 Reviewed [Updated]

by Matthew

Best Padlocks Reviewed

The best padlock is the one that best fulfills the need you have. That means, it’s not fair to compare an industrial weatherproof high-security lock with a small travel lock used to secure your duffel bag. Both are useful for the purpose they are designed for. So when you select a padlock, make sure you select one that best suits your needs. For example, you’ll need to think about the features of a padlock. These can include the shackle diameter, whether it uses a key, combination or Bluetooth, the weatherproofing rating, it’s weight, and the cost.

Below we have identified 8 padlocks that represent the best in their category based on security, build quality, weatherproofing, usability, technology, cost and value.

Best Overall High-Security Padlock for the Money

ABUS 37RK/80 Granit Alloy Steel Rekeyable Padlock
ABUS Granit Padlock

Product Description: The shackle disc cylinder in this padlock offers the highest security against manipulation. The cylinder is inserted from the top for maximum drill and pull resistance (8 Tonne pull resistance). The body and 14mm shackle are constructed from hardened alloy steel with a cataphoretic coating, which provides 40 years of rust resistance. Granit padlocks pass a -40°F and an Impact Test, and are resistant to bolt cutters, drills, and saws. One LED illuminated and 1 standard plus key are supplied with with each lock along with a security card. You may change the cylinder to match a key that is currently in use. Recommended use: securing large spaces like storerooms, containers, lorries; securing objects at high risk.

4.3

The Final Score

The Abus-Plus disc cylinder offers the ultimate pick protection. Only the most seasoned lock-pickers with plenty of time on their hands have a chance of unlocking this massive padlock. The Black GRANIT finish on this lock adds yet another bonus: it’s weatherproof. You’ll get the greatest degree of corrosion resistance with this lock. This is a great option for humid climates or marine use. The fully detachable shackle is another fantastic feature. The 37RK/80 shackle, unlike a swinging shackle, requires two cuts to release it from the lock, and pulling the shackle free of the lock requires tremendous strength.

Finally, the ABUS Granit is approved by many insurance companies! That’s a major vote of confidence in this piece of metal!

Best Weatherproof Combination Padlock for Marine & Everyday Use

ABUS 180IB/50 Padlock
Abus 180IB/50 weatherproof combination padlock

Product Description: The combination lock 180IB may be a good choice for securing mid-value assets with a moderate risk of theft in an outdoor setting. The 180IB is ideal for keeping your valuables safe in coastal areas, near harbors, or on the high seas. The body of the lock is made of forged brass, while the shackle is composed of high-quality stainless steel. This implies that the lock is particularly resistant to water. It can only be opened by entering an individual four-digit number code.

4

The Final Score

Always be cautious when searching for a weatherproof padlock. You’ll come across many padlocks labelled as weather-proof when in fact, they are not. That’s why the ABUS 180IB stands out. This is an official weather-resistant combination lock. It can be used in the most severe weater conditions and that includes marine and coastal environments where salt conditions are a threat. This is thanks to the steel shackle and solid forged brass body. Users of the lock consistently praise the combination function. It is extremely reliable in even the harshest of environments. Many combination locks get stuck and completely cease up. Not so with this model. With regular maintenance like a spray of WD-40 every few months, the lock will perform for years.

The 8mm diameter shackle means this lock can be used in a variety of applications around the house, garden, on equipment and boats. This means it is more universal than the larger, but more secure ABUS padlocks. One other noticeable feature is that the lock will not engage after being closed until the combination is shifted to an incorrect sequence. In other words, you can’t lock this padlock and leave it in the open position and at risk.

Overall, this is a really great padlock for harsh weather environments and to secure mid-value assets. If you have high-risk items to secure, then consider the beefier ABUS alternatives like the Granit.

  • Small digits on dial may become difficult to read over time

For added pick resistance, this machine comes with a 5 spool pin tumbler cylinder. The locking mechanism consists of two ball bearings that resist pulling and prying.

3.8

The Final Score

One of the key features here is the the solid iron shroud which protects these Pro Series padlocks from penetration. That, along with the bumptsop technology which protects against more sophisticated bumping attacks, ensure that these are robust padlocks for commercial applications. We have used these locks extensively for locks on trucks and storage units with great success- the last well even with humid damp climates. The boron shackle and heavy steel body are a good combination and help resist brute-force attack. Another major feature is the padlock’s rekeyable cylinder. This means it can be used at different locations using different key systems. The lock can be keyed individually, keyed alike or keyed with master key system offering flexibility and extended use of the lock in commercial and even industrial use.

Best Padlock for Kids to Use

Master Lock 1535DWD Locker Lock Set Your Own Word Combination Padlock
Master Lock 1535DWD Locker Lock Set Your Own Word Combination Padlock

Product Description: This indoor padlock is a fantastic option for a school or sports locker lock, ensuring safety and protection from theft. The combination is set by using a four-letter word that you set yourself. The metal body, hardened steel shackle, and anti-shim locking mechanism of the combination lock make it durable and secure. The padlock is available in multiple colors: blue, light blue, pink and black. Color is randomly selected when shipped. Dimensions- diameter 1/4" . Length 15/16" Width 11/16 Lock body: 1 1/2".

2.3

The Final Score

The Master Lock Password Combination Padlock is a good option for kids. Why? Because it doesn’t use a key which a kid can easily misplace. And it doesn’t use a number combination that could easily be forgotten. Instead, it uses a four-letter word as the “password”. So, you could choose from an actual word or an abstract sequence of letters. The lock is circular and comes in a variety of colours that make it fun. The lock consists of four rotating dials, a metal body and a hardened steel shackle. It’s easy to use, and different. It’s a little more bulky because of the circular shape. But that makes it more interesting to use and more easy to identify. It could be used in many applications such as school lockers and bags.

Best Travel Padlock

GIVERARE LL1-3 TSA Combination Travel Lock

Product Description: This padlock is TSA approved. This allows TSA screeners to unlock, inspect and re-lock bagage without any damage to your lock or cases. A simple2-step process will let you set up your combination. No key, no worries. The 3mm braided cable withstands up 220 lbs and the vinyl sheath provides corrosion and rust resistance. The lock is versatile and suitable for suitcases both hard and soft, personal bags and briefcases, laptop cases and backpacks.

3

The Final Score

The LL1-3 TSA Approved Combination Travel Lock from GIVERARE has several features that make it a great option for travelers and gym locker security. The lock’s flexible wire is my favorite, as it will safeguard the zippers of a bag while still allowing for easy movement. It’s because of this feature that the Master Lock 85575 TSA Approved Security Chain is ideal for protecting luggage on the road. It will extend the life of your cases by a significant amount. It’s also TSA-approved, allowing them to inspect your luggage without damaging it or the lock. It can effectively support up to 220 pounds without breaking. The model has a zinc frame, which has shown to resist rust and should function for a few years. Many clients valued this choice because of its longevity. I also enjoyed the 2-step reset method, which makes things simple. Simply unlock the lock, press the bottom button, and enter your new combination. With gym locker locks, this procedure is really straightforward. I’m concerned that it’s a 3-digit combination lock, though. After all, 4-digit versions provide 9,000 more possibilities for increased protection.

Ideal for gym and school lockers, gates, sheds, garages, tools boxes and travel luggage. Fortlocks is confident in their product performance and offers a 100% lifetime warranty with no questions asked and full money back.

2.7

The Final Score

The ‘FortLocks’ FL01 4-Digit Combination Padlock, is a simple and effective solution for gym goers. The lock’s steel cable provides decent security. If anyone was serious about getting in though, of course they could using the right equipment. It should fit the majority of lockers and can be used for luggage too. The combination is really easy to read and use as well although perhaps less dextrous older people might find it a little awkward. The combination uses four digits so there are 10,000 combinations which is more than adequate for gym use! For the price, the padlock is durable. And you get two of these in a pack. Plus, they could be used outdoors too, and while I cannot imagine them lasting over an extended period (years), they have a lifetime warranty, which is impressive at this price point..

Best Fingerprint Padlock

MYPIN Smart Keyless Bluetooth Fingerprint Padlock
MYPIN fingerprint padlock

Product Description: At just 2.8oz, this IP65 weatherproof padlock provides some nifty tech for it's size and the price: bluetooth fingerprint access, smartphone configuration. The padlock can be charged via USB and the battery can last for 2000+ fingerprint scans. When the battery is low, it remains locked for security. It takes just 0.5 seconds to scan a finger. Suitable for gates, lockers, sheds and warehouses, backpacks and luggage.

3.6

The Final Score

This list of the best padlocks wouldn’t be complete without a smart padlock. The number of smart locks is growing and this includes padlocks. That means manufacturers have to differentiate themselves. The MYPIN Smart Fingerprint Padlock stands out in the smart lock market. It’s packed with features that we would normally see on locks that cost two or three times as much! The fingerprint sensor can store and recognize up to 10 sets of prints, the Bluetooth allows you to remotely unlock it with your phone, and the IP65-rating makes it water resistant while the rust-proof shackle guarantees longevity. It is a shame that WiFi connectivity isn’t offered, but non of it’s compeitors do either. That would open a world of other possibilities, but the price-point for the technology in this lock is very good value.

Some users have said that the fingerprint sensor doesn’t work as well when fingers are wet or sweaty, but it should work fine once hands are dry. It might not compare to the smorgasbord of technical features that the Igloohome padlock offers (with audit reports and other bells and whistles), but the MYPIN is a very efficient, well-designed and surprisingly rugged padlock and good value for the price.

The padlock could be a good alternative to those with kids or for the elderly where securing keys or remembering codes can be an issue. I still prefer mechanical padlocks, especially for use outside but this sure is convenient!
