How Does the Arlo Home Security System Perform ?
Here are some observations about the Arlo security system, it’s setup, equipment and how it functions.
Installation – Very Simple
Arlo is famous for their awesome security cameras, but they also now have an interesting and innovative DIY home security system. And just like their cameras, their alarm system is also incredibly simple to install. Plus, it works with Arlo’s cameras (although it is not necessary to have the cameras in order to use the security system). Professional installation is not required. It really is very easy to install… like in just a few minutes! There’s no drilling or complicated wiring required. And the Arlo app does a great job guiding you through the setup.
Equipment – Simple and Efficient
Simplicity is the name of the game with Arlo’s home security system. Firstly, there’s the keypad hub which is the communication nerve center. It allows devices in your system to communicate with you whether at home or on the other side of the planet. Next up is the Arlo sensor. This is what makes the Arlo system so unique. These are multi-sensors. Unlike typical security system sensors, these small devices have multiple capabilities. Using their array of sensors they can sense when something moves, when doors or windows open or close, when there’s a water leak, when the temperature changes, when something tilts, when the lighting changes, and even when a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm goes off. This provides enormous versatility from one unit! Depending on where you place the multi-sensor, you can configure it to detect one or a number of different conditions.
Arlo’s hub and sensors are white, unobtrusive and clean-looking. And to puck them up, you can just peel and stick. If you need to mount in a corner, there is mounting hardware included, and that requires a drill. They are surprisingly small too, given the multiple sensors that they pack in.
Pricing – Affordable
The basic kit, priced at $200, includes a keypad sensor hub and two multi-sensors that can be easily placed around your home for monitoring (the price increases to $300 for a system with five sensors). Plus, if you want to add an extra sensor, it is a surprisingly affordable $30. When you consider the flexibility it offers, that’s a really great price.
Functioning – Reliable & Easy
It’s always important to understand the components of the alarm system so you can use it more efficiently and avoid issues. There are two ways to control the system: the keypad and the smart app. Both are easy. The keypad requires that a PIN be entered, similar to most alarm keypads. The Smart app allows access to the security system as well as all cameras.
Modes
There are three modes available for the system: Standby, Arm Home, and Arm Away. Standby mode is used to deactivate the motion and door sensors. Basically the system is disarmed or off. You will receive a chirp notification when the door is opened, but there will be no alarm. The sensors still do constantly monitor factors like temperature and light though.
When you put the Arm Home mode on, the door sensor gets armed but the motion detector doesn’t, so you can walk around your house without setting off the system. But when you select the Arm Away mode, both the motion sensor and door sensor will be activated and enter the “armed” state. If the system is activated, you will receive a notification on your mobile phone, and the control center will emit a beeping sound for a duration of 60 seconds. To turn the alarm off, simply enter your code in the keypad or hop on the app and do it. If you forget, a super loud panic alarm will go off. And if you’re signed up for the monitoring plan, someone will try to call the cops for you.
Smart App – Comprehensive
The Smart App could do with a minor improvement as when using for the first time it’s a little complicated to access the alarm system. But, once you know, it’s very easy and convenient to control the system using the app.
Arlo’s software also allows you to create widgets for every sensor on the application, ensuring convenient accessibility. The option to generate widgets for each component of your security system is available, and you can also establish automations for scheduling the activation and deactivation of your system.
Alerts & Notifications
Arlo connects its notifications to the arming modes, so the number of notifications you receive varies depending on the mode you choose. However, the default notification settings are highly assertive. For testing purposes, we had to individually modify the notification settings for each device in order to reduce unnecessary disturbances. While this process is relatively simple, it becomes time-consuming if you have numerous sensors.
Automation of Functions
In addition, you have the option to configure automations for activating and deactivating your system at specific times. When using this feature, make sure you change times from the default times, which are arm 8AM and disarm at 5PM, otherwise you’ll have a bunch of false alarms!
Geofencing
Arlo also has this helpful feature called Arrive/Leave where it knows when you’ve left or arrived home based on your phone’s location. In tech terms, this is called Geofencing (and there are pros and cons). So, when you leave, it automatically switches to a different mode, and when you come back, it’s it will disarm, for example. Geofencing only really works for family members who have smartphones and have installed the Arlo Secure app. Otherwise, everyone else has to manually disarm the system using the keypad.
Activity History
Arlo will keep a history of activity on a feed tab. It will do this even when notifactions are disabled. Each entry in the feed shows when and where the activity happened. This is an excellent feature to have. In my “business-rated” large security systems, this is something that I miss- seeing a history, even a short-history, of all activity within the system. So, this live feed history is much appreciated. Plus, if you have Arlo security cameras, just tap on the video event and you’ll be taken to watch the recording.
If you feel like you’re drowning in all the stuff appearing on your feed or if you’re on the hunt for something in particular, just tap on those three dots at the top right of the screen. That way, you can sort out the entries based on whether they’re about events or devices. Another really nice thoughtful and very useful feature!
Smart Integrations – Surprisingly Limited
Arlo’s reputation for compatibility with smart home devices is well-known among security camera brands. Unfortunately, and rather surprisingly, it does not apply to the Arlo security system. That said, like many other systems, there is some basic compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
With Google and Alexa, you can control your system by just using your voice. However, if you want to turn it off, you’ll need to provide a PIN code. Additionally, you can access certain information about Arlo security cameras on Echo Show and Nest Hub smart displays, as well as within the Google Home app. However, it doesn’t appear there’s an option to view a live video feed in the Alexa app.
Unfortunately, at this time, the apps for Google Home and Amazon Alexa are limited. They don’t provide any info about the sensors. That means there’s no way to link them to other smart home devices from different brands, like thermostats and smart locks. Even though older Arlo products work with Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings, the Arlo Home Security System doesn’t have these integrations. But, I expect these will be available before too long.
Performance of the Arlo Home Security System
For a new entry to the home alarm market, the Arlo Home Security System performs very well. The multi-sensors do a surprisingly good job in their various functions. The system is highly responsive; any action taken in the app is executed almost immediately.
One thing to remember is that should there be a power outage, the system will lose it’s ability to perform as intended. However, there is a battery-backup add-on for $80 which will ensure that your system remains active and that you receive notifications and alerts.
Accessories – Camera Focused
Battery Backup with Cellular Function
Because of the nature of the multi-sensor, there aren’t many accessories you can or need to add to the system. It’s definitely worth adding the battery backup module for the keypad hub. It also provides cellular communication, which means that the system no longer would rely solely on WiFi network to get alerts out to you or the central station.
Cameras, Cameras, Cameras
Otherwise, the main devices you can add are the awesome Arlo cameras, that can be accessed through the same well-thought out smart device app. I’ve written about Arlo cameras many times…. they are great, although pricey. I love them and use them personally. The Arlo doorbell camera, and Arlo floodlight camera add some additional features to the awesome Arlo camera lineup which includes the HD indoor camera and the weatherproof Pro 4, Ultra 2 and Essential models, the latter of which is decently priced and great value in my opinion.
While all Arlo cameras can be added to the app, some will require a smart hub (an arlo base station) others simply connect via WiFi, but there is one model that can communicate with the Smart Home Security Keypad, and that’s the Arlo Pro 5S 2K camera. Below is a list of the current Arlo cameras and their communication methods…
Connection Method | Model | Features |
Arlo Home Security Keypad / WiFi | Arlo Pro 5S 2K | 2K, HDR, (Dual band Wifi), 160° degree field of view |
SmartHub (base station) | Arlo Ultra 2 | 4K, HDR, spotlight, two-way audio |
WiFi | Arlo Pro 4 | 2K, HDR, spotlight, color night vision |
Arlo Essential Spotlight | 1080p, spotlight, color night vision
Arlo Essential Indoor | 1080p, auto privacy shield, night vision
Arlo Essential Wireless Video Doorbell | HD video, HDR, 2-way audio, night vision, 180° field of view, battery powered
Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell | HD video, HDR, 2-way audio, night vision, 180° field of view, wired power
Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight Camera | 2K, HDR, LED floodlight
LTE / WiFi | Arlo Go 2 | MicroSD for local recording, spotlight, color night vision, 2-way audio |
The Arlo Home Security System-enabled Pro 5S 2K Camera
So, the smart app will access both alarm system and any Arlo camera. But the Pro 5S is able to connect directly to the keypad hub via Arlo SecureLink. Like all Arlo cameras, this model is excellent. It is a high-resolution camera that offers advanced features such as color night vision and enhanced motion detection. It is designed to provide crystal-clear footage and ensure comprehensive surveillance. The field of view is also wide, which is great for adequate coverage around the home inside and out.
Like other models, the smart notifications using AI to detect humans, packages, vehicles etc are very reliable too, and limit false alarms. And the spotlight which can be manually turned on/off in addition to automatic settings is a useful feature that helps with color night vision but also works as a deterrent to would-be intruders when activated, basically a security light. One welcome addition over the other models is even greater battery life (30% more).
Professional Monitoring – Flexible and No Contracts
The thing I appreciate about Arlo’s home security system is that you have monitoring options. If you want to monitor the system yourself, you can…. for free. But, if you want the assurance of professional monitoring, where the system alerts a central station, that in turn contacts you or the authorities, then you can too. Obviously, this comes at a cost. But the cost is competitive compared to most other providers at $25/month. Plus, there’s no contract and you can cancel anytime. Another great option!
Pricing
Obviously, you can have the best features in the world, but if they don’t fit your budget, they mean nothing. So, where does Arlo stand when it comes to your wallet?
Equipment Cost
The Arlo Home Security System is pretty affordable at $200 for a base package consisting of a keypad and two all-in-one sensors. That said, you can get decent discounts too. And that also goes for the “Whole Home Protection” package which includes 5 all-in-one sensors with the keypad hub at $299 regular price. If you want to add more sensors, they’re just $30. That’s really a great price. However, I have to be honest, the cameras are on the expensive side. The Ultra 2 and Pro 5S are ~$250, the Pro 4 ~$200, and the Essential HD Spotlight $70. I do believe the cameras are worth it. They are excellent quality, truly reliable, and have some fantastic features, including AI smart features and smart home integration. The Essential in my opinion, is great value.
Monitoring Cost
There are three tier options from Arlo shown below. If you want the professional monitoring you’re looking at the Safe & Secure Pro plans which comes with a bunch of additional features too for those located in the US. I have an unlimited camera subscription, for my eleven cameras, and have been happy with the cost-effectiveness for what I get in return! If you want to self-monitor the alarm and are confident that is adequate to protect your home, then it’s free! But when you start adding cameras that you want to save recordings for in the cloud, you’ll start paying for it. So the $12.99 / month for unlimited cameras is a good option and you’ll self-monitor your alarm system. But, the combo of the professionally monitored home security and unlimited cameras bundled together does represent decent value in my opinion.
Arlo Secure | Arlo Secure Plus | Arlo Safe & Secure Pro |
One tap Interactive Notifications Up to 4K* video recording resolution Priority care and support | All Arlo Secure features Up to 4K* recording 24/7 Emergency Response | All Arlo Secure Plus features 24/7 Professional Monitoring Arlo Safe Plan |

$12.99 / month unlimited cameras |
How Arlo Stacks Up Against the Competition
While understanding the cost breakdown of Arlo is crucial, it is equally important to assess how Arlo compares to its competitors in terms of pricing. By comparing Arlo with other home alarm systems, you can gauge the value for money that Arlo offers.
Arlo vs ADT
Similar to other do-it-yourself (DIY) systems, Arlo’s value presents a significant difference compared to professionally installed systems that can be much more costly. For example, in our evaluation of the primary company in home security, ADT, we discovered that their system was challenging to install and excessively expensive. Just the ADT base alone costs $374 and additional expenses of $150 are required for three motion detectors, with other accessories needing to be purchased separately. On the other hand, Arlo is significantly more affordable as the initial cost of $200 includes the base and two 8-in-1 sensors.
Arlo vs Vivint
Vivint is an exceptional system as well and occupies the higher-end of the spectrum. It does home automation really well too. And that is one area where Arlo’s system drops the ball. However, Vivint has higher upfront and ongoing costs as well as contracts. So, on balance you have to balance your priorities.
Arlo vs Simplisafe
Simplisafe is also a well-liked choice and closely resembles Arlo in terms of cost and adaptability. It has become a top-performer in wireless home security. But here, Arlo stands out with its distinctive 8-in-1 sensors, allowing for a versatile system that can be adjusted as your needs change over time. Simplisafe does have a longer record in the industry and is a system we frequently recommend for so many use cases. So, compared to Simplisafe , I think Simplisafe still has a slight edge on the home alarm front because of their experience, but if we include the depth and quality of the home security camera offering from both, Arlo dominates. As you’ll see me state in many a security camera review, including the earlier Pro 2 cameras, Arlo is number one, although on the pricey side.
Arlo vs Ring
Ring is another favored do-it-yourself security alternative, but it has faced criticism for sharing your home security videos with law enforcement without requiring a legal document. On the other hand, Arlo assures that it will not engage in such practices.
The company states that they will not disclose your videos or account information to law enforcement, unless they have a legally-binding search warrant or court order. They also assure that they will not share your videos for private legal matters without your consent. Additionally, Arlo firmly opposes profiting from your data, stating that they prioritize their role “as a security company first and foremost.” and “not to personal information as a commodity to make money.”
How does Arlo compare overall?
Overall, the bang for the buck with Arlo’s alarm portion is very competitive. Their monitoring is also on par with the competition. The equipment cost of the cameras can be a lot more expensive on the higher-end models, but, as I keep mentioning, they if you are looking for a camera that is top notch quality, wireless and easy to install with a ton of features, Arlo cameras come with all of the above! So, Arlo has positioned itself right in the pack I believe, and differentiated itself with an affordable but also more versatile alarm system compared with the competition.
Who’s The Arlo Home Security System For?
The Arlo Home Security System is a really well thought out and executed system, especially for a first entry into the alarm system market. I imagine the product can only improve from here. It is ideal for those who are budget-minded and want simple but flexible functioning. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles (especially in smart home integration), but the equipment is very affordable, reliable and offers true flexibility with it’s 8-in-1 sensor that no other alarm system currently does. Plus, you have the option to monitor the system yourself for free. Even the professional monitoring is affordable and does not require a contract like some other higher-end system.
Overall, I would say that, if you’re a first timer and you’re looking for a security system, Arlo’s is ideal. In particular, I can see it being a great choice for for apartments and small to mid sized homes, as well as renters. I think the main competitor is Simplisafe here, which has set the standard for affordable, simple DIY alarm systems. But with this offering Arlo has something very competitive indeed. And if you are already have an Arlo camera or two, then their alarm system is definitely worth a look!
The Final Score – Is Arlo Home Security Worth It?
As you will have seen from this review of the Arlo Home Security System, it has been a pleasant surprise. Arlo has done many things well, right out the gate.
The Arlo wire-free security system is an easy DIY install with simple set up. It’s wallet-friendly with the basic package coming in at ~$200, and it can be expanded easily too. Plus, they have done something really innovative, and it works! The Arlo all-in-one sensor is almost a game changer. It is affordable at ~$30 and can offer many options in what you want to monitor, from motion to door/window entry, to garage doors, smoke detection even water leaks. It’s incredibly flexible, but it’s also reliable. The Smart App is very easy to use and is simple. Yes, there’s a focus on simplicity, and that’s a good thing but it also represents great value and offers huge flexibility. It also combines with the excellent Arlo cameras via the app (of which I am already a big fan).
So, all in all, I am interested to see where Arlo takes this next, and am confident in recommending this Arlo Home Security System to people.

The cameras produced by Arlo are totally worth it, in my opinion. The quality and reliability are exceptional and the options are extensive. The prices range from $70 for the Essential line, which is great value, all the way up to $250 for the Pro 5 and Ultra 2.
How does the Arlo Home Security System compare to other popular systems?
The system is still relatively new, but so far, it compares very well to it’s direct competitors at the same price level which are Simplisafe and Cove probably. It does currently lack some integration options, but that will come, because they already exist with their cameras. Then I think it will compete with Frontview and Abode for sure. Beyond that you are getting into professionally installed systems from Vivint and ADT really, and I think for residential setups in smaller homes, Arlo is a great, affordable choice.
